  Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi

One week removed from having its top two quarterbacks injured, Alabama hosted Southern Mississippi for homecoming and even though it wasnt prolific the offense got the job done defeating the Golden Eagles 17-3. Emergency quarterback Brandon Avalos attempted just 7 passes, completing 3 for 12 yards in the game. It was Alabamas impressive rushing attack led by 170 yards from Shaud Williams that provided the necessary offense. Williams started the scoring with a 44-yard run in the first quarter. Brian Bostick hit a 23-yard field goal in the second quarter to give Alabama a 10-0 lead. USM hit a field goal of its own as time expired in the half to bring the lead to just 7 going into halftime. After a scoreless third quarter Alabama added one final touchdown in the 4th with Williams diving through the middle for a 1 yard score that was set up by a blocked put by Chris James. James would eventually block 4 punts on the season. That, as of 2003 is a Tide record. The 2003 Crimson Tide finished the season 4-9 for head coach Mike Shula in his first season at the Capstone.
