  Alabama vs. Florida In spite of out gaining the Gators in total yards 496-194, Florida was able to keep the game close, with the Tide winning 23-12. Bama got on the board in the second after a 13 yard Jeff Rutledge run, and this was followed with an 87 yard touchdown run by Billy Jackson to give the Tide a 14-6 lead at the half. Tony Nathan would score on a 9 yard run in the fourth to provide the 23-12 margin of victory. The 1978 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1, as SEC champions, as national champions, and with a victory in the Sugar Bowl for Coach Bryant.
