Alabama vs.Tennessee

  Date: 10/19/1940
  Score: 12-27
Alabama vs. Tennessee An experienced Tennessee squad defeated a young Tide bunch by the score of 27-12 in Birmingham for the Tide's first loss of the 1940 season. Alabama did take the early lead in the game as Jimmy Nelson ran for a 14 yard score with Charles DeShane missing the extra point. The lead however did not last long as Tennessee, on its ensuing drive, went the length of the field and converted the goal to go ahead by a point. The Vols would add another score before the half to take a 14-6 lead at the half. Bama came back to bring the game within 2 after a Dave Brown 63 yard punt return for a touchdown in the early stages of the third quarter, but two more Tennessee scores stopped any attempt at a full comeback. The 1940 squad finished the season with a record of 7-2 for Coach Frank Thomas.
