  Alabama vs. Mississippi State Ed Salem was the difference in this game as the Crimson Tide defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs (then called the Maroons) but the score of 10-7. Alabama's first drive of the game led to a Bill Cadenhead touchdown from the one yard line on a critical fourth down play to give Bama a 7-0 lead. On the final play of the first half Ed Salem kicked a field goal from the State 15 to go on top 10-0. The Tide defense allowed a touchdown in the second half but it was not enough and the defense held strong to ensure the victory. The 1948 squad finished with a record of 6-4-1 for coach Red Drew.
