  Alabama vs. Virginia Tech In this 77-6 blowout over Virginia Tech, Bama set a school and NCAA record (for the time) by gaining 833 yards of total offense with an amazing 748 yards on the ground! In the first quarter, Bama would score a pair of touchdowns on runs of 51 and 2 yards by Wilbur Jackson and Randy Billingsley. In the second, Bama would score four touchdowns. These touchdowns would be scored on a 7 yard Ralph Stokes run, a Conley Duncan blocked punt recovered in the end zone, a 28 yard Richard Todd pass to Warren Dyar, and finally on an 80 yard James Taylor run. In the third, the Tide would again score four touchdowns. This time, touchdowns were scored on a 7 yard Billingsley run, a 9 yard Todd run, a 14 yard Jack O'Rear run, and on a 87 yard Calvin Culliver run. O'Rear would close the onslaught with his 28 yard touchdown run in the fourth. For the game James Taylor would run for 142 yards, Jackson would run for 138 yards, Culliver would run 127, and Todd would run for 102. The 1973 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1 as SEC champions, and as national champions for Coach Bryant.
