  Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi After only being up 7-3 at the half, Alabama would explode in scoring 41 second half points in defeating the Golden Eagles 48-11. Bama's lone score of the first half came on a 2 yard Steve Bisceglia touchdown run. In the third, Bama would score three touchdowns on runs of 12, 16, and 5 yards by Bisceglia, Wilbur Jackson, and Paul Spivey. The Tide would then score a trio of fourth quarter touchdowns to close the game. These touchdowns were scored on a 64 yard Gary Rutledge pass to Wayne Wheeler, on an interception returned 15 yards by Robert Cary, and on a 13 yard Robert Fraley pass to Peter Pappas. For the game, Bama would gain 565 yards of total offense, but 5 turnovers would keep the game "close." The 1972 squad would finish with a record of 10-2, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl for Coach Bryant.
