  Alabama vs. Vanderbilt The Tide needed to get back on track after starting the season 0-1-1, and they did just that by going into Nashville and defeating Vanderbilt 21-12. Bobby Luna scored the first Bama points in the game going around end 41 yards to the house. However Bart Starr was the offensive star of the game going 9-18 passing for 189 yards and two touchdowns. Starr would throw a pair of touchdowns on a 43 yard pass to Bud Willis and then a 30 yarder to Joe Cummings. The 1953 squad would finish the season with a record of 6-3-3, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl for Coach Red Drew.
