  Alabama vs. Mississippi State The Bulldogs came into Tuscaloosa with an upset on their minds, and they would take a 14-0 lead into the second quarter. However, Bama would outscore State 34-3 for the rest of the game and win by a score of 34-17. After a scoreless first, Jeff Rutledge would throw a 62 yard touchdown pass to Ozzie Newsome, and Fred Berrey would hit a pair of field goals (43 and 25 yards) before the half. In the third, Johnny Lee Davis would score on a 27 yard touchdown run, and Pete Cavan would score on a 25 yard touchdown run. Tony Nathan would close the scoring for the Tide with his 4 yard touchdown run in the fourth. The 1976 squad finished the season with a record of 9-3 along with a victory in the Liberty Bowl for Coach Bryant.
