  Alabama vs. Wichita State The Tide dominated Shockers of Wichita State in the first game at the Capstone of the 1979 season in shutting them out 38-0. Steadman Shealy started the scoring with a 27 yard touchdown pass to Keith Pugh in the first quarter. Shealy would later rush for two touchdowns. Major Ogilvie would also rush for a pair of touchdowns (a 6 yard rush followed by a 4 yard rush). The 1979 squad would finish the season 12-0, as SEC champions, and as national champions after a victory in the Sugar Bowl for coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
