  Alabama vs. Texas - El Paso In this contest, the Tide pounded the Miners of UTEP by a score of 56-7 in Birmingham's Legion Field. In the first, Bama would score a trio of touchdowns. Donnie Lowe would score the first two on runs of 2 and 1 yards, and Tyler Watts would hit Triandos Luke for a 10 yard touchdown reception to close the first. In the second, Bama would once again score a trio of touchdowns to go up 42-0 at the half. Watts would score the first two on runs of 16 and 9 yards, and he would hit Luke again for a 2 yard touchdown reception. In the third, Marvin Brown would score on a 13 yard touchdown run, and Ray Hudson would score Bama's final points with his 2 yard touchdown run in the fourth. For the game, Bama would have 588 yards of total offense with Watts rushing for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 2001 squad would finish with a record of 7-5 and with a victory in the Independence Bowl in coach Dennis Franchione's first season as head coach of the Tide.
