  Alabama vs. Duquesne After losses to two nationally ranked teams the Crimson Tide needed something to jump-start the 1949 season and the Dukes were there at the right time as the Tide thrashed Duquesne 48-8. Among the many Tide highlights was the 103 yard kickoff return by Jim Burkett, a 75 yard run by Jim "Bimbo" Melton, and a 26 yard run by Tom Calvin. Other touchdowns came off of a 20 yard Butch Avinger pass to Al Lary, a quarterback sneak by Ralph Cochran, and an end around play by Lary for his second score of the game. In all, Alabama's 6 halfbacks out gained Duquesne 322 to 85 yards on the ground. The 1949 squad finished the season with a record of 6-3-1 for Coach Red Drew.
