  Alabama vs. Penn State Six Bama turnovers resulted in the fist loss of the Ray Perkins era- a 28-34 defeat to the Nittany Lions. Alabama would score first on an 8 yard Walter Lewis pass to Joey Jones, and would not score again until the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Bama would score three touchdowns on a 1 yard Kerry Goode run, a 24 yard Lewis pass to Jesse Bendross, and on an 8 yard Lewis pass to Bendross. The 1983 squad finished with a record of 8-4 and with a victory in the Sun Bowl in Ray Perkins' first season at the Capstone.
