  Alabama vs. Mississippi State In this contest, Alabama would lose to the Bulldogs 16-17 on the road in Starkville. In the second, Bama would score a pair on touchdowns. The first came on a 3 yard Dennis Riddle run, and the second came on an 11 yard Shaun Alexander run. However, Jon Brock would miss the extra point after the second score, and it would prove to be extremely costly. Bama's only points of the second half came on a 42 yard Brock field goal. State would hit a game-winning field goal late in the fourth. Alabama rebounded from their loss to the Vols two weeks earlier by defeating the Tigers of LSU 26-0 in Baton Rouge. This game marked Shaun Alexander's coming-out party as a result of his school record 291 yards rushing and 4 touchdown performance. Alexander would score his touchdowns on runs of 17, 73, 72, and 12 yards. The 1996 squad finished the season with a record of 10-3 and with a victory in the Outback Bowl in coach Gene Stallings final year as head coach of the Tide.
