  Alabama vs. Mississippi State The Crimson Tide hosted the Mississippi State Maroons for its 1944 homecoming game and despite some early miscues the Tide prevailed 19-0. Harry Gilmer fumbled the opening kickoff on his own 29 yard line but Fred Grant bailed him out as a few plays later he intercepted a State pass on his on 13 yard line and ran it all the way back 87 yards. Late in the second quarter Lowell Tew found his way back to the endzone with a 13 yard run to give Alabama a 13-0 lead at the half. In the third quarter after an exchange of punts Harry Gilmer led a drive to the State 4 yard line and after 4 plunges Grant finally cracked the line scoring the third and final touchdown of the afternoon. The 1944 squad finished the season 5-2-2 and with an appearance in the Sugar Bowl for Coach Thomas.
