  Alabama vs. Virginia Tech Alabama simply dominated the outmatched Virginia Tech Hokies on both sides of the ball. Bama's offense racked up 556 yards of total offense to Tech's mere 136. Alabama came away with the blowout 52-13 win which could have been worse were it not for 5 turnovers. Wilbur Jackson started off the scoring with a 67 yard rush in the first quarter. Terry Davis rushed for a 2 yard touchdown later in the quarter. In the second, Bill Davis split the uprights with a 36 yard field goal, Wilbur Jackson scored his second touchdown of the game with a 9 yard rush, and Randy Billingsley had a 2 yard rush giving Alabama the 31-0 halftime lead. In the second half Steve Bisceglia tacked on a 1 yard touchdown. Late in the third quarter Virginia Tech would finally get on the scoreboard. In the fourth, Gary Rutledge had a 1 yard touchdown run and Peter Pappas caught a 21 yard pass from Robert Fraley to complete the rout. The 1972 squad would finish the season with a record of 10-2, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl for Coach Bryant.
