  Alabama vs. Maryland Alabama travelled north to College Park to face the top rated Maryland Terrapins and the Terps lived up to their ranked giving the Tide its worst regular season defeat 21-0. Maryland scored all three of its touchdowns in the first half. Despite the loss Bart Starr looked outstanding for the Tide driving inside the Maryland 10 yard line 4 times in the second half and going 12-23 passing for his season best 226 yards. The 1953 squad would finish the season with a record of 6-3-3, as SEC champions, and with an appearence in the Cotton Bowl for Coach Red Drew.
