Alabama vs.Vanderbilt

  Alabama vs. Vanderbilt Once again it was the play of Jimmy Nelson, one of the nations premier players that lead to Tide victory this time over Vanderbilt 25-21. Nelson passed for three touchdowns and his interception set up the first. The Commodores struck quick scoring the first two touchdowns of the game to take a two score halftime lead. In the third quarter Nelson intercepted a pass to the Vandy 12 and a few plays later passed to Hal Newman for the first touchdown of the game. Dave Brown scored the second Alabama touchdown and with the extra point Bama pulled to within one of Vandy. After a Commodore touchdown Nelson stuck again with his second touchdown pass, this one to Holt Rast for 34 yards to get to within 2 points trailing 21-19. For the final score late in the game Nelson passed to Russ Craft for 20 yards. With 3 minutes to go in the game and Vanderbilt driving Nelson intercepted a pass and the Tide killed the clock from there. The 1940 squad finished the season with a record of 7-2 for Coach Frank Thomas.
