  Alabama vs. Auburn A week after being upset by Mississippi State, the Tide rebounded with a dramatic 24-23 come from behind victory over Auburn. In the first, Bama would jump out to a 17-0 lead over the Tigers. The Tide would score on a 63 yard touchdown pass from Freddie Kitchens to Curtis Alexander, on a 37 yard Jon Brock field goal, and on a 7 yard touchdown pass from Kitchens to Michael Vaughn. Bama would then proceed to go down to Auburn 23-17, but would score the game-winning touchdown with only :26 remaining in the game on a 6 yard Kitchens pass to Dennis Riddle. For the game, Riddle would rush for 131 yards, and Kitchens would pass for 292 yards and a trio of touchdowns. After the game, Gene Stallings announced that he would be retiring as head coach of the Tide after the 1996 season concluded. The 1996 squad finished the season with a record of 10-3 and with a victory in the Outback Bowl in coach Gene Stallings final year as head coach of the Tide.
