Alabama vs. Mississippi State After a heart-breaking loss to the Vols a week earlier it was Alabama's turn to spoil the hopes of its opponent beating the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Jackson 24-20. After a State touchdown and 2 field goals Mike Shula started the Bama offense up with a 19 yard strike to Greg Payne. Paul Carruth added to the scoring in the second half with a 1 yard dive across the goal line. The Tide down heading into the final quarter looked on Shula again and he responded connecting with Richardson one more time for a 67 yard bomb so seal the Bama victory. The 1984 squad finished the season with a record of 5-6 for Ray Perkins.
