  Alabama vs. Vanderbilt Following two shutout losses in the last two games of the season Alabama closed out the 1939 campaign on a good note defeating Vanderbilt easily by the score of 39-0. The game took place on Thanksgiving. Jimmy Nelson scored the first touchdown of the game off of a pass from Hershel Mosley. Mosley scored the next touchdown of the game on an amazing 80 run around end. In the second Paul Spencer found his way onto the score sheet with a 67 yard run. Other Alabama points came off of a Mosley to Nelson touchdown pass, a Spencer run, and on the final play of the game a Billy Harrell pass to Hal Newman. This game also marked the last game for Assistant Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant who of course came back in 1958 to lead Alabama to 6 National Titles as head coach. Alabama finished the 1939 season with a record of 5-3-1 for Coach Frank Thomas.
