  Alabama vs. Mississippi State Mississippi State provided no contest for the Tide, and Alabama would easily defeat the Bulldogs by a score of 58-14. In the first, Bama would score on a 28 yard Terry Davis touchdown run, a 1 yard Steve Bisceglia touchdown run, and on a 22 yard Bill Davis field goal. In the second, David McMakin would run a blocked punt back 15 yards to the house, and Ellis Beck would score on a 1 yard touchdown run. In the third, Gary Rutledge would connect with Wayne Wheeler for a 20 yard touchdown score. Bama would then score a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns on runs of 1 and 2 yards by Robert Fraley and Wilmot. The 1972 squad would finish with a record of 10-2, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl for Coach Bryant.
