  Score: 35-14
Alabama vs. Mississippi State The Bulldogs came into Birmingham but never really mounted much of a challenge to the Crimson Tide losing by a score of 35-14 despite passing the ball almost 300 yards more than Bama. Alabama kicked off the scoring in the first quarter with Two 1 Yard dives by Major Ogilvie and added on to that lead with an 82 Yard Touchdown run by Tony Nathan. Miss. State attempted a comeback by scoring twice in a row making the score 21-14 in favor of Bama but the Tide would have nothing to do with that scoring Two more times. The first a 6 Yard pass from Jeff Rutledge to Tony Nathan and a final fourth Quarter score on a 25 Yard rush by Lou Ikner. The 1978 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1, as SEC champions, as national champions, and with a victory in the Sugar Bowl for Coach Bryant.
