  Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi After a horrible defeat at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs Alabama needed to get back on track and unfortunately for Southern Mississippi they were first in line for the Tide who won soundly 27-0. Butch Avinger scored the first points of the afternoon and in the second quarter Ed Salem hit Clem Welsh for the first of 2 times on the day to complete the scoring for the first half. Jim Franko intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown in the second half and the final scoring play of the game came on a circus catch by Welsh for his second score of the game. The 1948 squad finished the season with a record of 6-4-1 for Coach Red Drew.
