  Alabama vs. Mississippi State The 1945 homecoming game against Mississippi State was a great one for the Tide as this 55-13 blowout capped an undefeated regular season and game the Tide a trip to the Rose Bowl. Alabama's reserves got a chance go shine in this game. Mississippi scored first in this game after stopping Bama on the five-yard line but from then on the Tide was in control. In the second quarter Harry Gilmer ran for a 39 yard touchdown and Hugh Morrow kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7. Morrow scored himself twice a little later in the game on a 2 yard run and then a 45 yard reception from Gilmer. After State's second touchdown Lowell Tew took the kickoff 85 yards for a score. Tew added the next Tide touchdown on a 14 yard run that was set up by a blocked punt. Harry Gilmer then passed to James Corbitt for a 34 yard touchdown. Gordon Pettus stepped into the game next and the reserves took over for Alabama. Hal Self scored on a 1 yard run that was set up by Pettus and later Fred Grant caught a Pettus pass for a 6 yard score. The 1945 squad finished the season 10-0, as SEC Champions and with a victory in the Rose Bowl for coach Frank Thomas.
