  Alabama vs. Auburn Alabama needed an Iron Bowl victory in order to stay alive in the hunt for the national championship. Alabama knew this and did just that defeating the Tigers convincingly 35-0. Auburn was held to just 195 yards and 13 first downs in the game. Randy Billingsly started off the scoring with a 7 yard rush and later in the first quarter Gary Rutledge ran a QB sneak from one yard out to give Bama a 14-0 lead which they would take to halftime. In the third Rutledge again kept it himself, this time for a 3 yard score. In the final frame Wilbur Jackson ran it in from 14 yards out and for the final score of the game James Taylor had an 8 yard rush of his own to seal the shutout victory. The 1973 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1, as SEC champions, as national champions, and with an appearance in the Sugar Bowl for Coach Bryant.
