  Alabama vs. Auburn In Alabama's first ever visit to "The Plains;" the Tigers were able to spoil the Tide's run to a national championship with this 30-20 victory. Philip Doyle would open the scoring for the Tide with a successful field goal attempt. In the second, Bama would visit the end zone on a 18 yard touchdown pass from Gary Hollingsworth to Marco Battle. In the fourth, Hollingsworth would hit Battle for a 15 yard touchdown reception, and Doyle would hit a 23 yard field goal. This Alabama loss also meant that the Tide would have to share their 1989 SEC championship with hated Auburn and Tennessee. The 1989 squad finished with a record of 10-2, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Sugar Bowl in Coach Curry's final season at the Capstone.
