Alabama vs. Southern Methodist In what was the largest crowd ever to attend a game in El Paso, Texas, at the time, the Alabama Crimson Tide shocked the favored Mustangs 28-7 in the 1983 Sun Bowl. All of Bama's 28 points came in the first half and SMU's 7 came in the second. Ricky Moore scored the Tide's first two touchdowns in the first quarter. The first was on a 1 yard dive across the goal line and the second an 11 yard run. In the second, Walter Lewis ran a 1 yard quarterback sneak to put Alabama on top 21-0 and with 46 ticks remaining in the half Lewis connected with Joey Jones on a 19 yard completion for a touchdown. The Mustangs scored once in the second half but the Tide defense once again stepped it up to shut down "The Pony Express II." With this victory in the Sun Bowl the 1983 squad finished with a record of 8-4 in Ray Perkins' first season at the Capstone.
