  Alabama vs. Army Alabama would come from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat the Black Knights by a score of 29-28 in the 55th annual Sun Bowl. Philip Doyle would score Bama's first points with a pair of field goals (37 and 22 yards). David Smith would hit Marco Battle for a 7 yard touchdown reception late in the second for Bama's first touchdown. In the third, Smith would hit Greg Payne for a 23 yard touchdown reception. Alabama would then overcome a 28-20 fourth quarter deficit to win the game on a 32 yard Doyle field goal, and on a 2 yard game-winning touchdown run by David Casteal. For the game, Bama would have 507 yards of total offense with Smith passing for 412 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 1988 squad would finish with a record of 9-3 and with a 29-28 victory over Army in the Sun Bowl for Coach Curry.
