  Alabama vs. Auburn The Tide came into the final game of the 1949 season as 3 touchdown favorites but could not capitalize on the advantage as the Auburn Tigers defeated the Tide 14-13 in the second Iron Bowl since the series renewal in 1948. Auburn opened the scoring off of an Ed Salem pass was intercepted and brought back for the score. Salem redeemed himself a little later as he went over from the 13 yard line and converted on the point after to tie the game up at halftime. Auburn came back in the second with a 71 yard drive ending with a touchdown but the Tide came back once again with a 58 yard drive capped off by a 1 yard run by Tom Calvin. However Salem missed the extra point and the Tigers came away with the victory. The missed PAT was a bitter end to an otherwise brilliant season for Salem who had 4 rushing touchdowns and 7 passing. He also led the team with 51 total points. The 1949 squad finished the season with a record of 6-3-1 for Coach Red Drew.
