  Alabama vs. Houston In Mike Dubose's first game as head coach of the Crimson Tide, Bama would defeat the Cougars of Houston 42-17. In the first, Bama would score a trio of touchdowns on an 11 yard Curtis Alexander run, a 29 yard Freddie Kitchens pass to Rod Rutledge, and on a Fernando Bryant interception returned 66 yards to the house. In the second quarter, Lance Tucker would hit Curtis Alexander for a 43 yard touchdown reception. Bama would close its scoring with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Curtis Alexander would score on an 18 yard run, and Shaun Alexander would follow with a 22 yard touchdown run. The 1997 squad finished the season with a record of 4-7 in Mike Dubose's first year at the Capstone.
