  Alabama vs. UCLA In coach Dennis Franchione's first game as head coach of the Tide, Alabama would jump out to an early 10-0 lead over the Bruins, but would surrender 20 straight points and lose 20-17. The first touchdown of the Franchione era was scored after Tyler Watts hit Antonio Carter for a 78 yard touchdown pass in the first. Neal Thomas would hit a 30 yard field goal in the second to give Bama a 10-0 lead. After 20 straight UCLA points, Andrew Zow would hit Freddie Milons for a 71 yard touchdown pass play late in the fourth, but this would prove to be to little to late and the Tide would lose the game. The 2001 squad would finish with a record of 7-5 and with a victory in the Independence Bowl in coach Dennis Franchione's first season as head coach of the Tide.
