  Alabama vs. Mississippi Alabama jumped on the Rebels early, and the Tide defeated them soundly by a score of 34-13, in Birmingham, to open the 1977 season. Bama scored two rushing touchdowns in the first. The first came on a 6 yard Mitch Ferguson run, and the second came on an 8 yard Jeff Rutledge run. The Tide would also score twice in the second. This time, Tony Nathan scored first on a 1 yard plunge, and Steven Whitman scored next on a 3 yard run. Bama's final score of the afternoon came on a 1 yard Tony Nathan plunge in the fourth. The 1977 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1, as SEC champions, and with a victory in the Sugar Bowl for Coach Bryant.
