  Alabama vs. California Alabama opened the 1973 season by destroying the Golden Bears of California by a score of 66-0. The Tide would score a pair of first quarter touchdowns on a 2 yard Wilbur Jackson run and on a 32 yard Gary Rutledge touchdown pass to John Sharpless. In the second, Richard Todd would throw a 16 yard touchdown pass to George Pugh. In the third, James Taylor would score on a 3 yard touchdown run, Bill Davis would hit a 21 yard field goal, and Todd would hit Joe Harris for a 46 yard touchdown reception. The Tide would close the game with a fourth quarter explosion of four touchdowns. These touchdowns were scored on an 86 yard Rutledge pass to Harris, an 18 yard John Boles run, and on a pair Willie Shelby runs (32 and 5 yards). For the game, Alabama would have 667 yards of total offense with 405 of them coming on the ground. The 1973 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1 as SEC champions, and as national champions for Coach Bryant.
