  Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi The Tide opened the 1953 season in a very shocking way when Mississippi Southern in Montgomery upset them 25-19. Tommy Lewis scored first for Alabama early in the first to cap off a 42 yard drive. However the Southerners would answer with a touchdown on the following drive making the score 7-6. Bill Oliver would score next for Bama making the score 13-6. Bama's final score of the afternoon came late in the second on a 5 yard run by Curtis Lynch to give Bama a 19-6 lead. In the fourth the Southerners took over and scored 13 unanswered points to give them the upset. The 1953 squad would finish the season with a record of 6-3-3, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl for Coach Red Drew.
