  Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi Fresh off an unbelievable win against Southern California in which coach Bryant unveiled the wishbone offense the Crimson Tide headed home to Tuscaloosa and defeated Southern Mississippi 42-6. Alabama scored five rushing touchdowns in the game. The first two came from Johnny Musso (1 yard and 16 yards) and the next came from Ellis Beck to give Alabama a 21-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter Bama would score two more touchdowns. The first on a 4 yard Joseph LaBue run, and the second a 25 yard pass play from Benny Rippetoe to William Dexter Wood. In the final quarter Steve Bisceglia added an 18 yard touchdown to complete the rout. The 1971 squad would finish the season with a record of 11-1, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Orange Bowl for Coach Bryant.
