  Alabama vs. Southern Methodist Coming off a loss to Ole Miss to open the 1976 season, Bama responded by destroying the Mustangs of SMU by a score of 56-3. After going down 3-0 through the first quarter, the Tide would score 28 second quarter points. In the second, Jack O'Rear would score the first pair of touchdowns on runs of 7 and 19 yards, Tony Nathan would score on a 6 yard run, and Jeff Rutledge would throw a 45 yard touchdown pass to Ozzie Newsome to close the first half's scoring. The scoring would continue for the Tide in the second half. In the third, Bama would score a pair of touchdowns on runs of 17 and 7 yards by Johnny Lee Davis and Nathan respectively. The Tide would close the afternoons scoring with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, and Lou Ikner and Donald Faust scored them on runs of 11 and 3 yards. For the game, Alabama would rush for a total of 419 yards with Nathan rushing for 101 of them. The defense also played a solid game in only allowing a mere 170 yards of total offense to the Mustangs all afternoon. The 1976 squad finished the season with a record of 9-3 along with a victory in the Liberty Bowl for Coach Bryant.
