  Alabama vs. Furman The Crimson Tide opened the 1946 season against Furman in Birmingham and the Tide started the season with a 26-7 victory over the Hurricanes. Alabama started the game off slowly but picked it up in the second half. Norwood Hodges scored the first Bama points on a 20 yards interception in the first quarter. Furman scored on the kick off and took a 7-6 lead into halftime. But the second half belonged to Bama who scored 3 times. Harry Gilmer passed to Ted Cook for the first second half score. Bruno Philipinni recovered a fumble on the Furman 33 which set up a Hodges run. The final score of the game came off of a 14 yard Harry Gilmer run. The Tide gained over 300 yards in total offense while holding Furman to just 102. The 1946 squad finished the season 7-4 for coach Frank Thomas in his final season at the Capstone.
