  Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi For the opening game of the 1947 season the Crimson Tide had high hopes as Red Drew took over as head coach following the Legendary Frank Thomas. Alabama did not disappoint has they came out flying defeating Mississippi Southern 34-7 at Legion Field. The game also marked the opening of Harry Gilmer's final season as the Bama field general whose illustrious career ended as Drew's started. Gilmer scored 2 touchdowns in the game. The first a 33 yard pass to Rebel Steiner and the second off of a 4 yard run. Norwood Hodges tallied two touchdowns on run of 8 and 2 yards and Ed Salem scored one of his own. The 1947 squad finished the season 8-3 with an appearance in the Sugar Bowl for Harold "Red" Drew in his first season at the Capstone.
