Michael The Burner Turner led the Northern Illinois Huskies to Tuscaloosa for the first time in their history and came away defeating the Tide 19-16. Turner led the way with 156 yard rushing. Alabama started the scoring late in the first quarter with a 28-yard touchdown pass from Brodie Croyle to Zach Fletcher. However NIU blocked the extra point and ran it the length of the field giving them a 2-point conversion and an Alabama 6-2 first quarter lead. The teams traded field goals in the second with the Huskies hitting a 51-yard kick with 10 minutes remaining and Alabamas Brian Bostick hitting a 35-yard kick with 6 minutes remaining in the half. Northern Illinois scored the next two touchdowns in the game, the second being a 48 yard pass to give them a 19-9 advantage with just 7 minutes to go in the ballgame. Shaud Williams provided a spark with a 54 yard run just 2 minutes later bringing the Huskies lead back to within 3 but the defense held sealing the victory. The 2003 Crimson Tide finished the season 4-9 for head coach Mike Shula in his first season at the Capstone.
