Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi The Southern Miss Golden Eagles were simply no match for the powerful Alabama Crimson Tide and Alabama shut out the Eagles 52-0. USM was held to a paltry 143 yards of total offense while Alabama had 643 yards of its own. Richard Todd struck first with an 11 yard QB keeper. In the second quarter Russ Schamun caught a Todd pass from 42 yards out, and later in the quarter Randy Billingsly rushed it in from 5 yards out to give Bama a 21-0 halftime lead. Alabama was far from done in the second half however. QB Jack O'Rear ran it in from 30 yards out in the third quarter, and in the fourth Bama would score on a field goal and add on three more touchdowns. The field goal was a 27 yarder by Danny Ridgeway and the touchdowns were all on the ground. The first a 25 yard run by Ralph Stokes, second a 11 yard rush by Rick Watson, and the last touchdown of the day a 50 yarder by John "Duffy" Boles. The 1974 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Orange Bowl for Coach Bryant.
