  Alabama vs. Baylor The Tide simply obliterated the Baylor Bears by a score of 45-0 in the first home game of the 1979 season before a packed Legion Field crowd. Bama’s defense held the Bears to just 139 yards of total offense and 6 total first downs. The Tide scored early and often, adding points in every quarter. Alan McElroy scored on two first quarter field goals (30 and 25 yards) and added one more (33 yards) in the third. Major Ogilvie (on a 1 yard rush in the second quarter with the two point conversion added), Mark Nix (on both a 2 yard and 8 yard rush), Joe Jones (on a 1 yard rush), and John Hill (on a 10 yard rush in the fourth) would all score touchdowns in the rout. The 1979 squad would finish the season 12-0, as SEC champions, and as national champions after a victory in the Sugar Bowl for coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
