  Alabama vs. Georgia Alabama opened their 1961 national championship season by in spectacular fashion by defeating the Bulldogs 32-6 in Athens. Tim Davis would open the scoring for the Tide with his 41 yard field goal in the first, and a 1 yard Mike Fracchia touchdown plunge in the second would give Bama a 10-0 halftime lead. In the third, Pat Trammell would throw a 36 yard touchdown pass to Butch Wilson. Bama would then close its scoring with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns. Fracchia would score first, and then Mal Moore would throw a 10 yard touchdown pass to Red Wilkins. Fracchia starred for the Tide scoring 2 touchdowns and rushing for 70 yards. The 1961 squad finished with a record of 11-0, as SEC champions, and as national champions after a victory in the Sugar Bowl for Coach Bryant.
