  Alabama vs. Southern California Alabama opened the 1938 season in front of a crowd of 65,000 in Los Angeles. The Tide was able to win the game as a result of the strong play of the line. Alabama took the lead in the second quarter with an 11 yard pass to Hershel Mosley to William Selmmons. Mosley passed for his second touchdown later in the first half on a 2 yard pass to Gene Blackwell who made a spectacular one handed catch in the endzone to bring the ball down. Alabama's final score came off of a Hal Hughes interception return. Southern Cal scored its only touchdown late in the fourth quarter. Alabama would finish the 1938 season with a record of 7-1-1 for Coach Frank Thomas.
