  Alabama vs. Vanderbilt The Tide headed up to Nashville and ran all over Vandy in winning by a final score of 66-3. The Tide rushed for a total of 471 yards and scored on the ground a total of nine times. Steadman Shealy had two rushing touchdowns in the game; a 64 yard run and later a 19 yard run. Joe Jones added two touchdowns himself on a 3 yard run and a 1 yard dive. Major Ogilvie, Mark Nix, Steven Whitman, Landrum, and John Hill all added touchdown runs for Bama as well. The 1979 squad would finish the season 12-0, as SEC champions, and as national champions after a victory in the Sugar Bowl for coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.
