  Alabama vs. Vanderbilt Going into the fourth quarter, Bama only led the Commodores by a score of 24-21, but would outscore Vandy 27-7 in the fourth to give the Tide a 51-28 victory. In the game Tony Nathan proved to be Bama's most dominating performer by rushing for 163 yards on only 7 carries with one touchdown. Jeff Rutledge also starred by rushing for a pair of touchdowns in the game. The 1978 squad finished the season with a record of 11-1, as SEC champions, as national champions, and with a victory in the Sugar Bowl for Coach Bryant.
