  Alabama vs. Southern Mississippi Alabama opened the Bill Curry era with a 38-6 victory over the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi. In the first, Bama scored touchdowns on a 16 yard pass play from David Smith to Clay Whitehurst and on a 10 yard Bobby Humphrey run. In the second, the Tide scored on a 43 yard touchdown pass play from Smith to Humphrey and on a 22 yard Philip Doyle field goal. In the third, Bama scored on a 28 yard Humphrey touchdown run. Alabama concluded their scoring in the fourth with a 21 yard touchdown pass play from Jeff Dunn to David Casteal. Alabama's defense also starred in only allowing 166 yards of total offense to the Eagles. The 1987 squad finished with a record of 7-5 and with an appearance in the Hall of Fame Bowl in Coach Bill Curry's first season at Alabama.
