  Alabama vs. Duke Alabama opened the 1972 season with this 35-12 victory over the Blue Devils of Duke in Legion Field. The Tide were score a pair of first quarter touchdowns on runs of 8 and 1 yard by Paul Spivey and Joseph LaBlue. Duke would then score a pair of second quarter touchdowns to give the Tide a slim 14-12 lead at the half. In the third, Terry Davis would score on a 2 yard touchdown run. Bama would seal the victory with a pair of fourth quarter touchdown runs. These touchdowns were scored on a 39 yard Steve Bisceglia run and on a 12 yard Wilbur Jackson run. The 1972 squad would finish with a record of 10-2, as SEC champions, and with an appearance in the Cotton Bowl for Coach Bryant.
