After losing to California 13-0 in the Rose Bowl on the first day of '38, Coach Frank Thomas returned to Los Angeles for the opener of the season on September 24 vs. Pac-8 power Southern Cal.
In the first meeting of the Southern and West Coast power, the Crimson Tide rolled over the Trojans 19-7. USC would go on to represent the West in the Rose Bowl and upset the Wallace Wade-coached Duke squad 7-3. The Blue Devils entered that game not only unbeaten but unscored on.
A 13-0 loss to Tennessee and a 14-14 tie with Georgia Tech blemished a 7-1-1 slate for the Tide which finished 13th in the final AP ratings. Charley Holm earned All-SEC honors. |

Notes: The trip to California continues to separate the Tide from its SEC competitors who prefer to stay close to home and compete against lesser non-league opponents. |
