Although Alabama had been slapped by the NCAA before the season started, it wasn't until after the Auburn game that it became official the Crimson Tide would not be allowed to attend a bowl game. Excruciating losses to Arkansas and Auburn coupled with Tennessee's first win over the Tide since 1985 dampened the spirits in Tuscaloosa.
Two of the Tide's losses left a bitter taste in the mouth of the coaches and players. In the waning seconds of its 20-19 win over Bama, Arkansas had 12 men on the field, which went undetected by the officials despite the Alabama bench and the players on the field pointing them out to the officials. At Auburn, video and still photos clearly showed Curtis Brown catching a pass from Freddie Kitchens in the end zone but it was missed by the official.
There was a 10-3 victory over LSU, a 31-0 drubbing of Georgia in Athens, and a 24-20 win over Southern Miss when Brian Burgdorf hit Toderick Malone from 30 yards out on the final play of the game. Shannon Brown and Kevin Jackson were AP All-SEC choices. |

Notes: When the Tide played in Georgia, the team bused from Tuscaloosa. On the trip home, the team stopped at the rest stop on the state line and Gene Stallings mounted a police escort's motorcycle and demonstrated his skill at handling something besides his football team. |
