It had to be one of the most tumultuous years in Alabama football history. Off and on the field, it was a year that most Crimson Tide fans would just as soon delete from their collective memory banks.
Before he ever coached a game, Mike Price -- the successor to Dennis Franchione -- was dismissed in April following a personal scandal that occurred in Pensacola. Former player Mike Shula was hired with the hopes of salvaging the season and restoring a semblance of decorum to the prestige of the program.
There weren't many high points during the 4-9 season, either. Painful overtime losses to Arkansas and Tennessee, in games in which the Tide seemed to have in control, epitomized the entire year for the Crimson and White. The lone conference wins came against Kentucky and Mississippi State, while South Florida and Southern Mississippi were the only non-league victories.
Historically, there was one key point in time for this season. Alabama played its final game at legendary Legion Field in Birmingham on August 30. The Crimson Tide had to rally to beat South Florida, 40-17, on a hot afternoon at the "Old Gray Lady," marking the end of era for Alabama football. |

Notes: Alabama's defense yielded 333 points in '03, the most ever surrendered by a Crimson Tide unit. Two of the Crimson Tide's losses came at the hands of the teams that played for the BCS Championship, with Oklahoma beating Alabama 20-13 and LSU winning 27-3. Both games were played in Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Despite the disappointing season, offensive tackle Wesley Britt, tailback Shaud Williams and linebacker DeMeco Ryans were named to the All-SEC team. |
